Manchester Marathon 2026: Route, road closures in Sale

Over 42,000 people will take part in the 2026 Manchester Marathon on Sunday 19 April 2026, making it the UK’s second largest marathon event.

Organisers have now confirmed this year’s 26.2-mile course route, which includes runners passing through the streets of Sale once again.

The Manchester Marathon is known as a ‘PB-friendly’ race, due to its (mostly) flat roads. It boasts landmarks including Old Trafford and around 125,000 spectators are usually cheering from the sidelines.

How are roads in Sale, M33 affected on the day?

Bus travellers and drivers should expect diversions on the day, with many roads completely closed for several hours, including Brooklands Road and parts of Cross Street, Washway Road and Dane Road. 

Road closures in Sale include:

  • Cross Street: Fully closed 7.30am - 4pm. Closed southbound 4pm - 8pm

  • Dane Road: Closed 7.30am – 7.30pm

  • Chapel Road, Broad Road, Northenden Road, Derbyshire Road: Closed 9am - 7pm

  • Marsland Road, Cromer Road, Beaufort Road, Brooklands Road: Closed 8.30am - 7pm

  • Washway Road: Closed 7.30am-4.30pm
