Sale’s 18-hole short game golf course has reopened for the season

The summer season is underway a little early, as Trafford Council’s ‘hidden gem’ 18-hole short game golf course at Woodheys Park in Sale reopens.

Father and son Paul Rough and Jamie, who were among the first customers of the 2026 season to tee off in the spring sunshine.

Local families are urged to try out this fun, low-cost activity, benefiting from fresh air and beautiful, leafy surroundings of the Green Flag-rated park.

Woodheys is an ideal starting point for new golfers, as clubs and balls are provided and a game is only £6 for adults and £4 for juniors and seniors. There are accessible toilets and a car park.

Sharon Redhead of the Friends of Woodheys Park said: “It’s not so much a hole in one as a three in one here – a round of golf offers a physical, mental and emotional boost to all who come here.

“Generations can enjoy playing together. We know plenty of people who come for the day and bring a picnic, walk their dogs and enjoy the lovely children’s playground.”

Russell Scharosch of the Friends added: “The park and the golf course have been something of a hidden gem but that’s changing as golf in all forms rises in popularity and more people get to know about it.

“We’re in the process of promoting this course as an 18-hole short golf course as it offers so much more than ‘pitch and putt’, which people sometimes assume is more like crazy golf and more lightweight, seaside fun.”

The golf course at Woodheys Park off Kenmore Road was first installed as a nine-hole course in the mid-1970s by the newly formed Trafford Council. Today, the facility is maintained by One Trafford, the partnership between Trafford Council and Amey.

Suitable for beginners of all ages, as well as more confident players, the golf course is open every day from 10.30am, until the end of September. No pre-booking is required. The charge includes the hire of a seven iron and putter plus balls.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “We’re delighted to provide this attraction to the people of Trafford and beyond. Anyone can come here and take part – no particular skills or experience necessary – and it’s a great way to spend time in the outdoors.”

The Friends of Woodheys Park are always keen to welcome newcomers – their next gardening and tidying session is on Sunday 19 April from 10am.
