Trafford named one of the country's top areas for recycling
Trafford residents are among the best recyclers in the country, according to new national figures.
Latest UK Government statistics show that Trafford has the second best recycling figures of the 10 Greater Manchester boroughs and ranks 21st nationally out of 321 local authority areas. The figures also show that households in Trafford are throwing away significantly less waste overall than they were a decade ago.
In total, the amount of recycling and residual waste discarded by households in the borough has fallen by 14 per cent over the past 10 years. Across Greater Manchester, the average decrease over the same period is one per cent.
Trafford Council says the figures reflect the borough’s long-standing reputation for strong recycling habits, as well as residents’ awareness of what should go in each bin. Waste collections in Trafford are handled by the One Trafford partnership between the council and Amey.
Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said: “There are a number of reasons why Trafford fares well and is comfortably within the top 10 per cent of the most successful recycling local authority areas nationally.
“The people who live here are conscientious about their bins and this is supported by outside factors that make it easier to keep waste to a minimum.
“For example, supermarkets and manufacturers are using less packaging and fewer foods and drinks are routinely sold in heavy glass jars and bottles.
“We thank everyone who plays a part in the borough's good performance in waste management as we look to carry on improving."
The council has also confirmed that food waste collections for flats are being introduced this year, with the rollout currently under way.
