The library and foyer area on the ground floor of Sale Waterside will be completely refurbished, creating a modern, welcoming space for local residents. As part of the revamp, a permanent exhibition for the Cosgrove Hall Films Archive will be introduced, celebrating the animation studio behind much-loved classics such as Danger Mouse.

The improvements, which are being supported with public funding from Arts Council England, will see the library close from Monday 15 September to Saturday 01 November 2025.

During this time, the building will remain open for people using Housing Options Service Trafford, as well as for those collecting reservations or returning books. Staff and their visitors will also continue to have access.

Some events – including Storytime sessions for children – will continue at a nearby alternative venue on a limited basis. Full details will be confirmed closer to the date on Trafford Libraries’ website and social media.

Local people were invited to share their views at a public consultation in June, with feedback shaping both the final design and décor of the refreshed library.

Cllr Eve Parker, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, Arts, Culture and Heritage, said: “I am delighted with the news that work is due to start on the refurbishment of this fantastic library.

We are totally committed to our libraries in Trafford and this will be brilliant for our library users. Thank you for your patience and support as we create a vibrant, updated space for the whole community to enjoy.”

The newly refurbished library is expected to reopen on Saturday 01 November, offering a revitalised hub for reading, learning and community life in Sale.
