Dutch Courage announces closure
Independent Sale bar Dutch Courage on School Road has announced its immediate closure this morning (Monday 08 September), just eight months after new owners took over the business.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the owners said:
"Well that’s a wrap guys! We have had an incredible time! Unfortunately due to higher taxes, high rent, and the cost of living crisis we like many other hospitality businesses just can’t make it work so Dutch Courage is now closed!
We want to thank all the staff, DJ’s (sic) and musicians for working hard and being awesome! Our karaoke and open mic nights were the best! And of course all of you that came, drank, sang, danced and supported us. We have made some great memories and friends."
The bar had been a lively part of Sale’s nightlife, particularly known for its karaoke evenings, live music and open mic nights which attracted loyal regulars.
Dutch Courage began a new chapter in January this year when fresh ownership took over the town centre spot. At the time, the new team had spoken of their hopes to build on the bar’s reputation and create a welcoming space for music.
Sadly, like so many other independent businesses, Dutch Courage has found it impossible to keep going in the face of rising costs. A combination of factors, including higher taxes, soaring rent and the wider cost of living crisis, continue to make it extremely difficult for hospitality venues to survive, even with community support.
The closure will come as a disappointment to many in Sale who enjoyed nights out at Dutch Courage.
