The project will make it easier and safer to travel in and around the town centre, improving routes, crossings and connections between shops and services, nearby bus stops and Metrolink trams.

Proposed improvements focus on two busy junctions – Springfield Road, Tatton Road and School Road and the junctions of Britannia Road, Broad Road, Hope Road and Northenden Road.

The scheme has been shaped by feedback received through consultation on the Sale Town Centre and Movement Strategy, which sets out a long-term vision to make the town centre easier to get around while supporting local businesses, culture and community life.

It is hoped that plans will improve footways at both locations, particularly where space is limited, along with improving cross facilities – helping people move around the area more easily. Changes are also proposed to simplify traffic movements, including the removal of the straight-ahead route from Tatton Road into Springfield Road, to support smoother and safer journeys.

At Broad Road, the junction layout will be improved to provide a clearer and more efficient arrangement for all users. At the Hope Road junction, next to Sale Park and Ride, footways will be widened and the crossing area enhanced, creating more space for people walking and wheeling.

The proposals from Trafford Council and Transport for Greater Manchester are part of the wider Sale West to Altrincham Network Improvements (SWANI) programme funded by the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS).

Over the last 12 months, the partnership has provided new and improved bus stops, junction improvements and safer crossings in the area.

Cllr Barry Winstanley, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Climate Change, said: “We want to enable more people to use sustainable travel - such as catching the bus, walking, wheeling and cycling – by making these options safer, more convenient and easier to access.

“Over the last 12 months, we have delivered a range of upgrades from Sale West to Altrincham. These include new and improved bus stops, as well as better walking, wheeling and cycling facilities.

“The proposed changes for Sale town centre are final main stage of work for this project, subject to final approvals, and have been designed so that any future upgrades in the area can fit in easily.”

Anthony Murden, Head of Projects Group at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “We are improving public transport and active travel across Greater Manchester to make it easier and more affordable for people to get around so they can live healthy and happy lives.

“This work in Sale town centre, improving routes, crossings and links between shops and services, will help businesses thrive too while better connecting residents to job opportunities.

“The Bee Network is connecting people to places giving everyone in Greater Manchester the freedom to get to wherever they need to go, safely and easily, no matter how they travel.”

Subject to approvals, construction is expected to take place in early 2027.
