REVIEW: Kampasi Restaurant's new menu - a global twist on small plates
There is something quietly special happening in Sale Moor and if you have not yet visited Kampasi Restaurant since its new menu launch, now is the time to go!
Opened earlier this year by husband-and-wife team Laurence and Tapiwa, Kampasi is a real passion project. With this latest menu refresh, it has definitely found its rhythm – this is not your typical neighbourhood restaurant offering familiar, safe choices. Instead, it is a confident, thoughtful collection of small plates shaped by years of travel and a love of comfort food from around the world.
A menu that travels further than most
Kampasi’s menu is built around three simple categories – earth, land and sea – but what arrives at the table is anything but simple. Every dish feels considered, with layers of flavour that go beyond what you might expect locally. Chef Laurence brings more than 20 years of culinary experience to each plate and it shows. There is a sense that these are dishes inspired by real experiences rather than trends, with bold flavours that still feel comforting and approachable.
Better still, the entire main menu is gluten-free (minus the sourdough), making it one of the most inclusive dining options in the area without compromising on taste.
What we ate
Kampasi is designed for sharing and the advice is to order two to three dishes per person, depending on your appetite.
We tried a mix across the menu:
Gunpowder potatoes (£6.75) – fried potatoes served with date ketchup and mango yoghurt. These were the unsung heroes of the table, incredibly versatile, worked alongside everything else and added a sweetness and spice that was very moreish.
Peri-peri chicken skewers (£11) – a standout for flavour. The peri-peri sauce had depth and warmth rather than just heat, making it one of those dishes you could happily order again without hesitation.
Goan fish curry (£13) – pan-fried tilapia and prawns in a rich, aromatic curry sauce. Comforting, well-balanced and packed with flavour.
Crispy Thai beef salad (£10) – a lighter, sharper dish with (warm) crispy beef and cold fresh vegetables and rice noodles, all tied together with a punchy Thai dressing.
Grilled hispi cabbage salad (£8) – one of the highlights. Grilled cabbage with spices, coconut and pomegranate might not sound like a headliner, but it absolutely deserves to be. Fresh, textured and full of flavour.
Beyond the food, the people behind Kampasi are what really make it. Laurence and Tapiwa are warm hosts, the kind who care about your experience without being overbearing. Service was attentive, with thoughtful recommendations based on appetite and how much we planned to order. They clearly want you to enjoy the food as much as they enjoy serving it and that personal touch makes a difference, especially in a smaller, more intimate setting like this.
A brilliant addition to Sale Moor
Kampasi has certainly brought something new and exciting to the local food scene. It is a place you could visit casually midweek or take friends when you want to show them something a bit different. If you are looking for something beyond the usual, Kampasi’s new menu delivers. Bold flavours, thoughtful cooking and friendly hospitality, all in Sale Moor village.
