Trafford Council has confirmed that six gritters are on standby and more than 1,500 tonnes of salt and grit are in storage as the borough prepares for freezing temperatures this winter.
The council, working alongside its highways partner Amey, has been preparing for colder conditions since the beginning of October, with teams monitoring weather forecasts to determine when roads need gritting.
Main roads, busy routes and bus routes will be prioritised during freezing conditions, with the aim of keeping traffic moving safely across Trafford. The borough's 92 grit bins have also been refilled over recent weeks, with stocks set to be monitored and replenished throughout the winter.
Trafford's six gritters are equipped with route-mapping technology and satellite navigation systems to help drivers cover designated roads. Onboard CCTV cameras also allow teams to monitor grit levels in real time.
Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council's Executive Member for Highways and Environmental Services, said: “Our teams are highly organised and are well prepared for the big winter freeze. This is very important as the weather can change very quickly and we need to be ready.
“Our main priority, as always, will be making sure that roads across the borough are safe for drivers and pedestrians alike."
