Sale Wetherspoon to cut all food and drink prices for one day only

Sale’s Wetherspoon pub is cutting the price of every food and drink item by 7.5 per cent for one day only next week.

The J. P. Joule on Northenden Road will reduce its prices on Thursday 17 September, as Wetherspoon pubs across the country take part in the company’s annual Tax Equality Day.

The promotion means a typical £10 spend on food and drinks will cost £9.25 on the day. But the discount isn’t simply a promotion to get more people through the doors.

Wetherspoon is using the day to highlight what it says is an unfair difference in the way pubs and supermarkets are taxed and to campaign for a lower rate of VAT for the hospitality industry.

Pubs currently pay 20 per cent VAT on food and drink, while most food sold by supermarkets is zero-rated for VAT. Wetherspoon argues that this gives supermarkets a significant tax advantage over pubs, bars and restaurants.

Kev Muldoon, manager of The J. P. Joule, said: “We are proud to support the campaign to reduce the level of VAT within the hospitality industry.

“Customers coming to the pub on Thursday September 17 will find the price of their food and drink is lower than normal.

“We are keen to highlight the amount customers could save if VAT in pubs was lowered permanently.”
