A LOOK INSIDE: Sale Library reopens with bright, modern new look
Sale Library reopens this Friday (07 November) following a major refurbishment that has transformed the space into a brighter, more welcoming and accessible hub for the community.
We went to take a first look ahead of its reopening tomorrow.
The project, funded by Arts Council England, has completely refreshed both the library and the foyer area at Sale Waterside. Visitors will notice the difference as soon as they walk in – the space is brighter, more open and far more comfortable to spend time in, with new furniture and a layout designed to make browsing and relaxing feel easy rather than cramped.
The previous shelving could feel a little close together, but the new layout gives readers room to move, pause and explore. There are plenty of tables and chairs dotted around, creating a relaxed atmosphere for studying, reading or enjoying a quiet moment.
Families will be pleased to see the new under-fives area, which now includes its own ‘big book stage’ for storytime and rhymetime sessions. All regular clubs and children’s sessions will resume from Friday, offering little ones and their grown-ups an inviting space to play, listen and learn.
The library stocks more than 25,000 books, with improved digital facilities also now in place for residents who use the space to work, research or get online.
As part of the refurbishment, the foyer has also been redesigned to act as a more welcoming gateway to the wider Waterside building. The aim is to support a lively cultural hub at the heart of Sale, drawing together arts, community activity and everyday library use under one roof.
Another exciting addition is the introduction of a new permanent exhibition dedicated to the Cosgrove Hall Films Archive. The legendary local animation studio created iconic characters such as Danger Mouse and Count Duckula, and the new exhibition will celebrate the studio’s legacy here in Trafford. A specially designed display cube at the library entrance will also house Postman Pat alongside his sorting office, which is sure to be a nostalgic highlight for visitors of all ages.
The Cosgrove Hall exhibition is expected to open fully to the public in early 2026 – so keep an eye out for updates as the launch approaches.
For now, the books are back on the shelves and the library team is ready to welcome the community back in – the new-look Sale Library is well worth a visit!
